Have you ever had to repeatedly write down or verbally share your Wi-Fi username and password with family and friends who visit or stay with you? I am aware that I have.
An easy fix for this issue is to generate a QR code in Windows for your Wi-Fi, which others can readily scan with their device’s camera and instantly connect.
Apps capable of this have existed for a while, but Microsoft started offering a built-in feature to create QR codes for Wi-Fi in Windows 11 in late 2024.
I’ve observed this feature employed by clever hotels and cafes, and it greatly simplifies Wi-Fi access, yet who claims it’s limited to businesses alone? You can also do it at home! Here’s the method.
What actions to take:
- Access Windows Settings and go to Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage Known networks.
- Select the arrow located to the right of your Wi-Fi account name.
- In the subsequent window, click on the Show tab next to the Wi-Fi network password.
- You should now view your Wi-Fi password along with a QR code created for your Wi-Fi network.
- Capture an image of the QR code and print it so that it is available to those who require it.
After obtaining and printing the QR code, your family, friends, or guests can use the camera on their smartphone, tablet, or PC webcam to scan it and join the Wi-Fi network without needing to enter the login and password
